Planning a Website

Here are some ideas to consider if you have a website that is not performing, it will also help you with google ranking.

Keywords

Firstly, start thinking about your website differently, a good looking website is nice, but it should work for you, think about what the search engine "see's". Search engines cannot see images, so words in images are not worth anything except for their alt tags.

Think of what the average person would type into google to find you, avoid technical terms unless visitors would search for it directly and know what it means.

Select 3-4 keywords, no more initially, too many will water down the importance of the others and make it too hard to target.

Highlight the keywords on your page, they should be in H1 size (Heading 1). This tells search engines what your site is about. You can also use H2 and H3 tags to highlight less important keywords and key phrases.

The keywords should be repeated throughout your website, to prove your site is really about what your keywords say it is.

Short, Sharp Content

Next, studies have shown that visitors lose reader interest for anything over 10 words, keep your descriptions short sharp and free of technical words. You can elaborate in the detail pages, or in detail areas. Use summaries at the beginning of lengthy articles or stories. Use titles, bullet points and break info into smaller  meatier paragraphs of information that are easy to read.

UX

Create a mood, while informative images are good, you are wanting to instill a "image" in the visitors mind, and that should be happy, positive and welcoming. Use images to relay that.

Make sure you use alt tags in your images to get in those keywords.

Images

Its now proven that visitors response to the website is purely based on images, look and feel. There is quite a bit of information out there on this, search for UX (user experience) for more information.

Contact Details

Your contact details should be on the homepage and easy to find.

Get an email address with your domain ie contact@yourdomain.com.au, try to avoid a Gmail or Hotmail address.

Facebook & Social Media

Get a Facebook page going, ask clients to like it and leave feedback, post almost every day to it with common interest stories. Post articles from your website and repost a link to it from Facebook. Invite your friends to like and share your page.

Meta Data

Your meta keywords and description should reflect your primary keywords, there is debate over meta keywords usefulness, however every little bit helps and use them to re-enforce your keywords.

Personal

Personalise it, many people have issues with this, but it really does work, if you put a face to the service or product then it humanises you. People can immediately relate to you, otherwise you are like the other business's out there.

Testing

Make sure you thoroughly test your website, check all links and read it, get someone to check it. Also use Google's mobile compatibility test to check that its mobile compatible otherwise it will not show up in google or it will be penalized.

There are many more things to look out for that can help your website work, but this is a great starting point, if you provide a well formatted, descriptive site with "Real Value" content then the rest will take care of itself.
